Slave Lake at a Glance
Outdoor adventure awaits at Slave Lake, located two-and-a-half hours north of
Edmonton in Big Lake
Country. Find one of Alberta's
largest recreational lakes, Lesser
Slave Lake and white sandy beaches at Devonshire
Beach, situated within the Lesser
Slave Lake Provincial Park. Visitors are drawn to the beach every year to
watch the Alberta
Open Sand Sculpture Championship and partake in summer fun such as swimming
and a variety of water-sports. Other summer attractions include festivals—namely
Riverboat
Daze and the Songbird
Festival—and golf at the Gilwood
Golf and Country Club, located within the provincial park. Or, for those interested
in nature, visit the
Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory and see rare bird species. Several routes
including the Frontier Trail, now part of the Trans-Canada
Trail, provide hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities through boreal forest
and along lakes. Slave Lake offers a variety of accommodations including hotels
and campgrounds, as well as shops and restaurants to enjoy during a family vacation.
